I received disturbing news today. I had noticed an article in the local paper, about indigent remains being buried. One of the names was an old family friend, Lew Fairfield. What makes this so disturbing is that we tried to get possession of his ashes, but the county ME wouldn’t give them to us because we weren’t relatives. We were the closest thing he had to a family, but obviously that wasn’t good enough. Better to bury his ashes in an unmarked grave than give them to people who loved him, who cared about him.
They were supposed to contact the Veterans’ Association to take possession of the ashes and give them a proper burial. Doesn’t look like anyone did. It’s a terrible way to treat the dead when they know that people cared about them.
It’s so sad. It’s not what Lew deserved.
